Jaume A. Badia-Boher (Swiss Ornithological Institute): Animal demography as a pillar for conservation: lessons from the past and challenges for the future

In our seminar, Jaume will explain how and why the study of wild populations has evolved along time. While the interest for the study of population dynamics comes as far as from the ancient Greeks, there has been a large increase in the number and the degree of sophistication of statistical methods from the end of the XIXth century, and especially, from the 1970s onwards. From early brute estimations of population size, we have moved to the study of patterns and processes with the aim of disentangling population dynamics to the finest scale. This is also providing us more tools to implement more effective conservation action, which can be fundamental in the context of the present biodiversity crisis. In the talk, he will go through these contexts and will also describe the state-of-the-art and likely future directions in the study of population dynamics, and the potential implications of this for wildlife conservation.
